The Superior Brush Company, a brush manufacturer, was started by the Mertes family in 1931. With experience garnered from the Specialty Manufacturing Company - which was sold, becoming part of Pittsburgh Plate Glass in Baltimore - several brothers, including the present owner, began manufacturing handmade wood rotary brushes, as well as some made of aluminum.
Incorporated in 1936, the Superior Brush Company has been in continuous operation for more than sixty years, except for a brief period during the Second World War, when the company closed because all available labor was directed to the war effort
After the war, the company resumed operation as a brush manufacturer and added a line of dusters; the first ones were made of rubber. As the years went by the business grew, it became necessary to expand. The company moved from its old location on Berea Road to its present site at 3453 West 140th Street in Cleveland. The Superior Brush plant is 40,000 square feet.
During the sixties, the company again expanded to include woodworks to produce its own rotaries, a plant of 11,000 square feet.
