Company Profile

The Superior Brush Company was started by the Mertes family in 1931. With experience garnered from the Specialty Manufacturing Company - which was sold, becoming part of Pittsburgh Plate Glass in Baltimore - several brothers, including the present owner, began manufacturing handmade wood rotary brushes, as well as some made of aluminum.

Incorporated in 1936, the Superior Brush Company has been in continuous operation for more than sixty years, except for a brief period during the second World War, when the company closed because all available labor was directed to the war effort.

After the war, the company added a line of dusters; the first ones were made of rubber. As the years went by the business grew, it became necessary to expand. The company moved from its old location on Berea Road to its present site at 3453 West 140th Street in Cleveland. The Superior Brush plant is 40,000 square feet.

During the sixties, the company again expanded to include a woodworks to produce its own rotaries, a plant of 11,000 square feet. There are currently six automated woodworking lines in operation, which are adaptable to most any design a customer requires. In addition, there are three skewers and a paint room. Several inspectors keep a close eye on the rotaries, ensuring that quality is preserved throughout the production process.

Superior Brush specializes in making staple set and beater bar rotary brushes, scrubber brushes, shampoo brushes, oval floor brushes as well as strip brushes in various designs - including arc, rings, and dusters. State of the art machinery allows the company to keep customers supplied - filling orders faster and staying ahead of the competition.

The company currently employs more than sixty people; line employees are thoroughly trained in every aspect of production, and certified, which Superior requires. Inspectors vigilantly check every work station to ensure quality control.

Line supervisors have between fifteen and twenty years production experience. Our staff of mechanics keep our equipment maintenance and if a problem occurs, quickly rectify it.

Our maintenance department help us to make the best use of our shop, our machinists make may parts hard to find in normal markets.

Management at Superior Brush have a combined total of some 200 years brush making experience - with several people over 45 years in brush manufacturing and one with over 60 years. Even our office staff and line supervisors have may years of useful experience, which translates into fewer mistakes, better quality product, and savings due to the best allocation of resources.

Now that we have reached the twenty-first century, Superior Brush is gearing up to make brushes for another generation, adapting when necessary, but bring the market our experience and our reputation for excellence in making the very best brushes for our customers.
